The National Youth Gathering of the ELCA wrapped up this past weekend. The daughter of a friend of mine was a volunteer at the gathering. While they worked very hard in supporting the services of the people attending the gathering, and people who attended did great work at the gathering, one thing stood out for her.
In the midst of this mass gathering of 35,000 people, a man came up and said, “I need to be baptized.”
He saw the people of God serving and caring for people, and he asked why. The answer was that they are sent by our Lord to care and love one another.
As she put it, “If that was the only thing that 35,000 of us accomplished this week, it was enough. It was all worth it.”
