This morning marked the celebration of Senior Citizens Month at the Lower Ninth Ward Senior Center located at the site of Trinity Lutheran Church. So many people gave of their time, their skills, and their finances in order to rebuild Trinity and I wish you could have been there for the party. There were more than 100 people present and more than 50 members of the Lower Nine Senior Center there. Some had organized a choir, and opened with a prayer thanking the Almighty for the gifts that had been given that put them there.

“God is good. All the time. All the time. God is good,” was the call and response more than once.

There was Zumba dancing, and then line dancing to Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy.’ All sorts of local celebrities and politicians gave greetings and spoke of the needs and gifts that seniors bring to our communities; there were recognition certificates given through Senator Mary Landrieu’s office. After all the festivities the food; ribs, chili dogs, potato salad, rolls, fried chicken, and drinks were served. Everything was interspersed with choir pieces giving praise to God for what he had given.

Many of you in the Camp Restore family are responsible for the programs that are available for seniors and others in both the Lower Ninth Ward and New Orleans East. You may not be aware that RAI Ministries took on the operation of two Senior Centers this past May, one in the Lower Ninth and the other in New Orleans East. Most of the funding comes from federal Community Block Development Grants and the City of New Orleans.

We have been blessed with some gifts that supply materials and help support the food program for the centers. Virtually all of the participants are in the very low end of the economic spectrum and our centers supply them with a generous meal for lunch that is prepared by our own Mrs. Lorraine. For some it is the only meal of the day.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers for the ministry we share!
